1940s Gumshoe Fedora | Vintage 40s Jet Black Fur Felt Hat 。This is definitely a custom made hat from an estate sale. The beautiful crown is shaped so it is cylindrical and has a creative indentation at the top front. There is a wide red grosgrain band around the crown. At one front side there is a narrow bow made of the same red felt, plus 2 tall purple feathers. Two short purple ostrich feathers project downwards, and 3 delicate red feathers and long quills complete this stunning look. There is a grosgrain square attached to the inside of the hat, no doubt to cover the feather quills, which pierce the crown.There is an elastic band attached to the inside. The wartime 40’s saw a huge variety of hats that were suitable for any face shape, hairstyle or personal preference. Throughout the war & on both sides of the Atlantic, elaborate creations brightened dreary utility fashions, brought about by rationing. The only items not rationed were hat materials. Explosions of feathers, veiling & artificial flowers were popular. There is no designer label, indicating it was a custom-made creation. This is an authentic piece of fashion history! This hat is in wonderful vintage condition & has been lovingly preserved among over 1300 vintage hats we have collected for 40+ years.
